camera for tattoosWe have said before that there is no perfect camera. Not in all aspects anyway. But maybe we can get closer to it by dividing the field of action.

I want to talk about Tatoos and Tatoo Artists this time. If your business is related to under-the-skin-art, your picture needs are pretty different from de rest of us mortals.

First of all, you do need a camera. In this area, your art tends to walk away and you need to keep it with you someway. So, what should the tatooer’s cammera do to be right.

  • You want good close ups. This is called macro function, and its main limitation is the minimun focal distance. Anything in the 5 to 15 cm. (2 to 6 in.) would be just fine.
  • Good color range. This somewhat technical stuff, but you can always ask a friend. Cameras are not the same, and there are some that do not get the colors right.
  • you don’t really need depth of field, (you’re taking pictures of skin after all!) but the body is always a challenging target to shot at, so if you can, try to get deeper fields of action.
  • Pixels are not a first need here. You’re not looking for big pictures. so anything between 4 and 7 Mp would be just fine.

So, for all the above, I think the best camera right now if you’re starting your tatoo studio or maybe you’re thinking about changing your current camera is the L11 from Nikon, that you can buy for something like $100  if you’re willing to look.

Buying a MacMany people out there  recommend (and explain why) to buy a mac with a conviction that resembles that of the most radicalised blood-signed-contract fanatics. Me for example

Macs are, beyond discussion, a bit more expensive machines, really difficult to tune up in hardware that usually ship more in capability than more of 90% of the consumers use.

The list of good reasons to buy a mac is also long and it is everywhere. However, if you are an entrepreneur, I think you should at least fulfill 3 of these 5 reasons to buy a mac.

  1. You are relatively new to computers: Most people won’t try a new system just because it is new. They have to learn all, all over again. So, maybe, bad learned, why bother
  2. you don’t like dealing with trouble: beyond the cruel truth (Macs being just  7% of US market) Macs almost never give you any trouble, and there is only one known virus over the las 5 years)
  3. Image matters. If so, your only option is Mac.
  4. Safe buy: In normal work conditions, a Mac will not grow old (that means it won’t become outdated) before 3 years passed. You’ll find it does all you want afterwords too.
  5. If you are in a startup stage, presentations and all, the Mac is a great choice. It is great for presentations, it looks great, you have a remote, great projector compatibility. This reason alone could justify the mac purchase.

LCD receptionistMaybe this entry is already old before I post it, but reality shows me every day it maybe not,  since there are a lot of offices out there that still have monitors on their desks that could have easily be built all the way back in 1980.

And it is really bad PR. CRT’s look really bad, not only because it sells an image of indifference towards technology, they are difficult as hell to clean and they use an enormous amount of space on the desk.

I don’t want even to get started with those places where image is the thing to have in mind, like the receptionist’s desk or the free Internet computers at the hotel’s lobby.

If your computers are going to be there to the public, customers or clients to see, you should be thinking about changing your monitor fleet to LCD. Mainly because they are so much prettier, but also the consume less energy and (of course) cover less space. They are so much easier on the eyes and I promise none of the myths surrounding the flat panel displays are going to become true.

I recommend the Samsung LCD systems, mainly because they always make me happy enough, contrast and speed ratios are acceptable in all the product line. Oh! and in my opinion they price tag is also right.

But if image is your thing, then you could look at the high end devices, there are some really tasty!

La mejor camara para un barOk, a said it before but I’ll say it again, no camera is suitable for everything, there is no BEST CAMERA for all things to be done. So, as I anyway want to talk about it, I’ll narrow it down a little bit. So I decided I’m starting with what is the best camera for a Bar.

The best camera for a bar

I can hear people saying “What for?” Well, a camera is allways something you want around, the time allways comes (you never know when is a celebrity going to shhow up). Anyway, a camera that’s going to live in a bar needs to be really good at some specs and there are others that are not that important. So, now that you’re maybe thinking to buyone this things you should have in mind.

  • good pictures with no light for obvius reasons
  • Good to excelent battery life
  • Space and the ability to stance is not something abundant in a bar, big focal apertures and good focus range is extremely important
  • 4Mp today is the minimun out there, that should do it, you don’t need that much resolution in this field.
  • Try not to choose a vanilla camera. Handeling the gadget can get very rough in a bar.
  • Try to keep it cheap, run away from the costly adons (like memory stick)

Cameras improve every day, and this one I’m going to recomend it is not going to last as the best in the field, but if you cover the obove, I imagine your’re covered. For what it’s worth I think de Kodak EasyShare D6490 that you can get these days for around 140 bucks.

Market shareI remember when market research was a million dollar thing to do… Ok, I don’t, maybe I’m to young to remember, but I can imagine how hard it could have been without the Internet.

Think of any way to start a market research, a cheap one, that does not start at the world wide web. Difficult ha? And maybe even more difficult if you try not to think of Google.

So here is how we do it. We turn on the web, and Google our thing. That’s (usually) it .Today I want to say a couple of thing about that.

  1. Try different search engines.
  2. And then…
    • Go through clicks when your looking, click and click, and please try to read, don’t look for numbers
    • Different engines may give you different results, try a couple no matter what is your favorite, and don’t forget to search for images
    • When you’re looking for market data on blog, look at the blogroll, numbers must be somewhere
    • Bookmark everything, social bookmarking is growing really fast, some other person was probably looking for the same thing and maybe what you’re looking for is already bookmarked. Search in Del.icio.us too!

Sometimes I really would like to know what’s going on in a bar before going, And maybe find out if someone I Know is there. Of course I would also like to known the menu, its telephone number and address.

This kind of service is not new, is just that I was watching The GeekBrief the other day and they were talking about yahoo’s new service Live that is very similar to Stickam from the older days. Anyway I forgot about it and yesterday watching Diggnation the issue came up again.

It is really interesting if you’re a reporter or maybe you have a bar. It is a really cheap way to add value to your site, and sometimes, It is really original to show people what is going in on this side of the fibre.

Down here I leave the Live transmition from some drugstore in Brazil. Hey, call me anything but boring!

Fact: everyday people care less and less of where your business is.
No point in arguing that statement. Truth is you can’t think your business as a neighbourhood leader any more. These days global is such a common word we all take it as a default feature.
The thing is no matter how digital we become, we’re still flesh and bone. And we like to known where things are.
So go to maps.google.com, google your business address, or your business related places, and embed that in your site some how.
You have nothing to lose and you can gain these things.

  1. Trust: as I said people like to know where thing are.
  2. Exposure, you’d be surprised how many people would actually go to your shop/office/showroom
  3. Google results: tag yourself in google maps and your location will add relevance to related searches (this works great with google ads)

See you soon!

Twitter phoneTwitter is no more than a site where you post a short message about what you’re doing, what you’re thinking or want to do. And maybe a lot of people will read it.
I’ve been thinking about advertising via twitter for a wile now, and I haven’t yet figured out how to make it efficient.
The thing is there is no cost to it.
I know, I know, its viral marketing after all. And I know there are many experts by now in viral marketing.
And anyway people is advertising on and via twitter since the beginning.
The question still remains though: spending the same amount of money… Which is better?
